Food Scene

We love food and Barbados has excellent restaurants. These are many and varied from fine dining through super-trendy to good-value and street food.
Very chic beach bar in the sand - currently our favourite restaurant. Main focus is cocktails which are excellent - managed by the guy who used to be the mixologist at the Cliff. Simple but high quality fresh food such as barbecued fish or pork. Great for watching the sun go down over the horizon. You won't just want one drink. Good for celeb spotting.

Fabulous atmosphere right on the beach. Long established - Love the vibe. You descend down a mahogany staircase to a large dining area on the beach. Again European food with a Barbados slant. Not top fine dining but still very good - they do a Sunday roast if you are mad enough to want it.

Laid back vibe - does both good quality comfort food and higher quality dining. Great for cocktails. Humming on a Sunday.

Great sushi. Great restaurant to go to if some of your group likes Sushi as it provides a mixture of food. Again, great quality - it is typically near the top of the restaurant ratings. If you are driving, park in the Limegrove centre and walk over the road. The saki is good. Less trendy than some of the others. You have the choice of hitting outside - which is what we do.

Drinks & Nightlife

Nightlife in the West Coast of Barbados is mostly dominated by restaurants. There is a trend for having a cocktail whilst watching the sun go down before then heading off to a restaurant and there are a couple of excellent beach bars that have opened with this in mind. If you want more raucous nightlife then go to St Lawrence Gap on the South Coast.

Fantastic value fish market with fresh fish caught daily. They will fillet the fish for you with great skill and remove all bones. Fish include tuna, maki maki, red snapper, grouper, barracuda etc etc. Its great to wander down the beach to the fish counter and then take the fish back for lunch. Typically though you will buy enough for several meals.

We love tapas and I was impressed with the quality of the food here. A bit pricey and tapas portions but I liked it.

Entertainment & Activities

Barbados is great for sun worshipping and water sports. It also has quite a lot of history which is really interesting. You won't find a massive amount of culture in terms of theatres etc.
Coral Cove is right on the beach - the garden gate opens onto the beach. We have our own sun loungers and umbrellas and our own safe swimming area with buoys marking the boundary. There is snorkelling on reefs either side of coral cove - loads of fish although the Great Barrier Reef it aint. On the beach you can find paddle boarding, jetski, glass bottom boats, sailing etc. From the beach we love to do very long walks North and South. North you can get up to Speightstown - stop for drinks along the way, maybe lunch at Lone Star; South you can actually get to Bridgetown - stop for lunch at La Cabane. There is paddling in places so take your flip flops and you do need to go on to the roadside pavement in one or two places. Suggest you get the bus back.

Horse racing is fun. This is a real proper racecourse. Great to visit for betting and rum punches. You can actually park up and watch for free but its best to pay to get into the stand nearest to the finishing line - last time I went it was only $10 USD to get in.

Interesting tour but the main benefit is the rum tasting at the end. Tour is normally done by a young entertaining guide and everyone has a good time. You can buy some seriously good rum from the rum shop.

Great food, premium drinks. We have been on Silver Moon many times and we think it is the best. We like the morning cruise - they pick you up from the apartment and take you to the dock. You stop for snorkelling and swimming over wrecks - every time we have been we have seen turtles. Food is lovely and a lot of rum and prosecco can be consumed which is included in the price. There are about 12 people on the boat.

Barbados has several beautiful tropical gardens and the East Coast is wild.

East Coast Walk. The East Coast is very different from the West Coast. It is wild with Atlantic rollers and a long beach. We find it is best to park at the Northern end of the East coast and then to walk South down the beach towards Barclay Park. After your walk, maybe take in lunch at the Atlantis hotel in Bathsheba.

Sightseeing

Steam train and old house. The house is old and interesting from a historical perspective but the best two things are the new steam train - yes a real one, a big one - and the rum distillery. I actually did some stoking on the train as we travelled a mile up the coast.

Simple but interesting trip to the house occupied by George Washington when he stayed at Barbados. They have told a story quite well with various exhibits. There are also some caves under the house which were fun.
