Elk Knob State Park - 20 minute drive to a 4,423-acre North Carolina state park. Among the many hiking trails, one leads to the ridge. It is a fairly steep hike, but the view is worth it.

We prefer to park at Bass lake. It's an easy walk with wide carriage trails. The farther you hike in to the property, the less people you will see on a busy week end. We like the maze trail that goes to the apple barn, then cuts back to the main road and back down to the lake. The lake loop is about a mile. the maze trail takes us about two hours to hike
