A climb to the top of Croagh Patrick is well worth it. It can be tricky in some places, particularly the last 20 minutes but the view from the top is incredible on a clear (or clear-ish) day. Wear good quality hiking boots/shoes. You can hire walking sticks from the car park (which also has a coffee shop and toilets).

Travel the Western Greenway from Newport to Mulranny by bicycle or on foot. Scenery is fabulous, especially on a sunny day. You can grab some lunch in Mulranny and then return or continue on the Greenway to Achill.

Neighbourhoods

Louisburgh is a beautiful village approximately 20 minutes from Westport town. It has lots of character with some great local pubs for food and nightly music sessions. From the village there are views of Croagh Patrick to the east, the Atlantic to the west, and the Sheaffrey and Mweelrea Mountains to the south. Louisburgh is famous for its many unspoilt beaches, with local beach Carrowmore retaining it's Blue Flag for excellent clean bathing water again in 2021. Beaches in the Louisburgh area include Carramore, Old Head and Bertra, while beaches in nearby Killadoon have been rated as the best in Europe, i.e. Tallabawn (Silver Strand) and Dooaghtry.

Local Beach

Definitely one of our favourites, a further few kilometres on from White Strand. A 20 - 25 minute drive out of Louisburgh this beach is pretty much the end of the road… next stop America! Generally quiet and always breathtaking. Perfect for a swim or fun on boogie boards or rock pool fishing with the kids. There are no lifeguards on Silver Strand.

Carrowmore is our nearest beach. Perfect to walk to at only 20 minutes from the house on foot, or 5 minutes by car - drive through the village (past the Gala shop) and take the first right over the bridge. Carrowmore is ideal if you are learning to surf as there can be waves but the beach is sheltered by the harbour. Lifeguards monitor the beach during the summer months.

Carrownisky & Killeen beaches are basically one vast beach, split down the middle by a river. These beaches are popular with surfers due to the great waves. Lifeguards patrol Carrownisky during the high season of June - August. You can find these beaches about 10 drive west on the R378 out of Louisburgh.

Long beach so great for walks with sheltered harbour (safe for children to swim) and option to rent kayaks and stand up paddle boards during summer months. Has lifeguard on duty throughout summer.

City/town information

Westport has been called 'the best of Ireland', it's a small town with a massive community feeling, gorgeous surrounding countryside, and a brilliant social scene. Overall the food and bars in Westport are excellent. There are plenty of places to shop with clothes, gift and furniture shops lining the streets. There’s also a great focus on culture in the town with festivals such as the Westport Festival of Music and Performing Arts, Westport Horse & Pony Show, Westport Arts Festival, and Westport Seafood Festival to name but a few.
