A completely undeveloped beach with good waves for boogie boarding. Popular with teens. Also a small surface (not cavern) cenote. It is very popular with locals and very crowded on weekends.

Sightseeing

A favorite Mayan ruin about 30-45min drive. Recommend renting bicycles to pedal through the jungle to the various structures in the site. This has one of the few pyramids you are still allowed to climb (this may change, so check!)

The most famous Mayan ruins. About 2hrs drive. Strongly recommend getting there at opening time (8am or 830am). It gets unbearably crowded by around 1030am or 11am.

A personal favorite. This small Mayan ruin has a small section of the most perfectly preserved Mayan carvings and masks. There is also an impressive cenote on the same property -- you can rent bikes to get there.

Do I need to rent a car?

We would recommend renting a car. There are so many fun things to see and do in the area, having a vehicle gives you a lot of flexibility. Most of the sights are pretty spread out. It's quite easy to drive down from the airport (about 60mi, 1.5hrs)on a good highway. Driving in this part of Mexico is easy and safe.

How do I get around if I don't rent a car?

If you prefer not to drive we can organize taxi/shuttle pickup for you. The cost is roughly $100--$120 each way. Once at the house you can call a taxi for when you want to go somewhere. If you are on a day-trip you can rent a taxi for the day. But you'll want to plan ahead a bit, because there isn't a taxi stand with taxis waiting, at Soliman bay.

Snorkeling

By far the best snorkeling is right out your door at Soliman Bay – take a kayak to the buoy in the middle of the bay. The snorkeling in Akumal bay and Xelha simply don't compare. The snorkeling is the principal reason we bought the house. Yalku is a good option for very little kids and anyone not confident enough to go snorkeling in Soliman Bay – lots of fish in a totally calm inlet. But visibility is highly variable.

Kayaking

We have 3 double kayaks for your exclusive use and the bay in front of the house is a fun relatively protected area for kayaking.

Cenotes

Cenotes are water-filled limestone caverns -- a unique must-not-miss Yucatan experience. Each has it's own character. Our nearby favorites include Gran Cenote (can get crowded), Dos Ojos and Sac Actun. There are more amazing ones near Coba and Valladolid, about 30-60mins drive.
