Sightseeing

Medieval hilltop village - uniquely, Heptonstall has two churches within one graveyard. At the centre of the village are the ruins of the Church of St Thomas a’ Becket built between 1256 and 1260. Heptonstall also had a small local history museum with some interesting exhibits, (sadly closed in May 2021 but may reopen as a community asset in the future) and is famous for being the location of the grave of poet Sylvia Plath (who was married to poet and writer Ted Hughes from another neighbouring village, Mytholmroyd). You can enjoy a fairly strenuous walk to Heptonstall using the ancient steep cobbled track known locally as The Buttress which starts at the far end of the old Packhorse Bridge in Hebden. The track is bisected by the main Heptonstall Road: once you get to the road, walk along a couple of hundred yards (great view from here - see if you can spot your AirBnB!) until the road starts to dip downhill, then at the green footpath sign, pick up the steps on your left leading to the other half of the Buttress which will bring you right into Heptonstall. (approx 30-40 mins walk). There is a highly rated cafe (Towngate Tearooms) serving wholesome meals and amazing cakes and the traditional real ale village pub (White Lion) which serves a full pub-food menu. https://www.whitelionheptonstall.com/
