Pretty good sized waves. Some free parking on the street, some for only $1 that is only 3 short blocks to the beach. Shops and diners are reasonably priced and geared toward the military. We went camping here and at first were a little frightened to hear the artillery going off at the military base nearby, but once someone explained what it was, I felt more assured.

This is the home of the San Diego Safari Park, and some beautiful vistas of desert, dry hills, and new housing developments to look like the old Spanish missions. The park is hilly, the bathrooms are spaced quite far apart, and my little one had an accident trying to racing down many hills 20 minutes to get to the next bathroom. It has a lot of flamingos that are easy to spot, a couple large parrots, and a very curious cassowary that was very interactive through the plexiglass. The rest of the animals were asleep, off exhibit, hidden in brush, or inaccessible because you have to pay an extra $200 to $500 per family to have a safari tour. I was not expecting the extra costs. We stayed in an AirBnB called La Casita in Vista with a private pool, mini-golf, and water slide into the pool that was a lot of fun.
