The Mount Washington Cog Railway, also known as the Cog, is the world's first mountain-climbing cog railway. The railway climbs Mount Washington in New Hampshire, United States. It uses a Marsh rack system and both steam and biodiesel-powered locomotives to carry tourists to the top of the mountain. The Mount Washington Cog Railway is in a remote mountainous area that is poorly mapped by GPS services. Access to Marshfield Base Station is from Route 302 near the Omni Mount Washington Hotel in Bretton Woods and is prominently marked by one of our retired steam locomotives. Please follow the directions below to ensure that you are not directed to the wrong side of the mountain, otherwise, you will miss your train! Take Route 302W to Bretton Woods, NH. Turn right at Fabyan’s Station Restaurant onto the Base Road. Continue six miles on Base Road to the Cog Base Station. Please Note: Plan to arrive 45 MINUTES before departure time to allow plenty of time for ticketing and restroom visits. All trains board 15 minutes prior to departure time.

Opened in 1868, The Mt. Washington Cog Railroad is known as the first Mountain climbing cog railroad. It is also the only one whose route is entirely built above ground on an elevated trestle system. And it has the claim of being the second steepest railway in the world. Mt. Washington is know for it's wicked weather, and thus is a center of weather science and research. Be sure to check the weather forecast before you go and pack accordingly. Once on the summit, you will have plenty of time to take in the views, purchase a snack or souvenir, and go through the Weather Museum.

The Cog is the first mountain-climbing cog railway in the world, and the only one currently operating in North America. With an average grade of 25% (some sections approach nearly 38%), it’s also the second steepest in the world! Motive power is primarily provided by a fleet of seven powerful biodiesel locomotives, each custom designed, built and maintained on site. And with a nod to its steam heritage, the railway also continues to operate a pair of century-old, coal-fired steam engines.
