Castle of Assos Castles Assos The Castle of Assos stands in a peninsula right in front of the village. It used to be one of the strongest castles of Kefalonia but until today it has suffered a lot of damage.

One of the two castles you should not miss visiting in Kefalonia. It is a genuine example of the Venetian fortifications, who wanted to establish a strong fortress with a permanent population. It is built on the peninsula of Assos, in a highly strategic position and today you can enjoy the view as well as see what is left of its old glory. Some of the ruins of the walls of the castle that reach 2000m. Have been preserved until today, as well as the residence of the Venetian lord (since 1593 it was the seat of), the barracks and the church of St. Mark. The vaulted entrance of Assos Castle, which is preserved in good condition, is also impressive.

Castle of Assos: The views of the Assos picturesque viallge, port and the nearby isolated beaches are breathtaking! The castle of Assos is a fine example of military architecture of the island of Cephalonia—British general Charles James Napier described it as 'stronger than Gibraltar'—and one of its main tourist attractions.Park your car in the parking spaces available at the bottom of the castle and then walk up the pedestrian road. Before you arrive at the peak you will see a sign guiding you to the left follow it to arrive at the south gate which offers amazing views.. Don't forget your water & wear walking shoes as cobbles at the top!!
