Go late afternoon to enjoy a rocky mountain hike to the lake or enjoy the free stargazing at the visitors center. You need 4wd to get up to the summit. Make sure you stop into visitor center first. There is also a park with restroom just pass the observatory. It is a great place to take a break if you are making the drive from Hilo to Kona.
My favorite beach with turtles swimming around. Both shallow and deep spots but protected by a breakwall.
