Located at the southernmost tip of the Florida mainland, just before the Florida Keys, Everglades National Park is the largest subtropical wilderness in the U.S. and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park’s 1.5 million acres are a mosaic of ecosystems, from slow-flowing freshwater sloughs and salt-tolerant mangrove forests to tropical hardwood hammocks, pine rocklands, freshwater marl prairies, moss-draped cypress domes and the sparkling marine waters of Florida Bay. In these complex systems, you’ll find a wide range of native water and land animals, including alligators basking right off the Anhinga Trail, herons and egrets feasting in the marshes and slow-moving manatees cruising the bay.

Visit Coral Castle Museum and stand baffled amid the giant stone structures, just as scientists, engineers and scholars(not to mention every other visitor) have done before you. Added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, this mystifying attraction was built by Latvian-born Ed Leedskalnin, who began constructing it in 1923 as a monument to his lost love, Agnes. While most people would write a sappy letter or send flowers, Ed spent 28 years single-handedly building, carving, sculpting and constructing a castle out of more than 1,100 tons of coral using just hand tools. Look in and around the castle and you’ll find other items made of coral: a sculpture garden, rocking chairs, a Polaris telescope and a nine-ton gate that’s so light it can open with the touch of a finger. Most impressive? Ed was only five feet tall, weighed no more than 100 pounds and did most of the work at night, by lantern light.

The farm and fruit stand is a popular attraction from November through mid-April, when it’s open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There are also special event openings, so it might be a good idea to call or check the website for current times. The fruit stand has a menu that includes everything to satisfy that sweet tooth. Bring cash, because plastic is not accepted. Oh, and prepare to wait in a long line because their goodies are just that good. PICK YOUR OWN BERRIES Whatever you do, don’t miss a chance to pick your own berries on a visit to Knaus Berry Farm. There’s nothing fresher than a sweet strawberry or tomato picked directly from the vine. Grab a basket and head behind the fruit stand, where rows of fruits and veggie plants await. One section of the farm is devoted to a vertical growing system, so you don’t have to bend down or get dirty to pluck the best-looking produce. For those who prefer picking strawberries the old-fashioned way, you can also select your berries from the traditional rows of strawberry patches. One thing is for sure… a stop at Knaus Berry Farm while visiting Homestead is a fun (and sweet!) time for the whole family.
