History
Travelling on the West peninsula of Kefalonia, the Homeric Pali, the visitor discovers a different part of the island, Lixouri, the beautiful Choropoula, as called by the poet Andreas Laskaratos. Paliki offers a multitude of various seashores, picturesque villages built upon theIonian architecture, beautiful venetian bridges, picturesque pathsand a magnificent pure natural environment.Lixouri is mentioned for the first time in the archives of the Venetian Senate in 1534 and it is the most historic town in the contemporary history of Kefalonia. Today, it is a modern town which has the infrastructure required at its visitors’ service. The history and the culture of this place have their origins in Greekmythology, when Paleas, son of the first mythological king of Kefalonia,Cephalus, gave his name to the region. At the area of Akrotiri, there was a temple dedicated to Neptune, where archaeologists found a plate representing two dolphins as well as ancient coins representing Dimitra, the dolphin, the wheatear, Cephalus, Athina Palladaand Pegasus. Paliki is the spiritual cradle of Kefalonia. Andreas Laskaratos, Ioulios Typaldos, Mikelakis Avlichos are some of the great men, spiritual offspring of the area.Paliki is also famous for its remarkable cultural events, choir and philharmonic orchestra festivals, the celebration of ‘varkarola’, the carnival of Lixouri as the top winter cultural event, the celebration of local wines in Mantzavenata and the traditional religious festivals with music and dance in outdoor places.

The views from here over the sea especially the sunsets are breathtaking! The Kipoureon monastery (Monastery of Kipourei or Kipouria) lies in the west of the island of Kefalonia, 12 kilometres from Lixouri town and 46 kilometres from Argostoli, the capital of the island. This monastery was founded in the mid-18th century by a Greek Orthodox dean of the island of Paxos. The monastery got its name from the many gardens that are here ( Kipos Garden). What makes this monastery fascinating is the fact that it is built on a rock, nearly one hundred meters above sea level. Η μονή γιορτάζει στις 25 Μαρτίου και 14 Σεπτεμβρίου. The larger beach has taverans and shops running along the shore line where you can get drinks and snacks as well as a fresh meal.Just be aware that due to Assos being one of the most picturesque and popular day trip villages on the island the prices can be a bit on the steep side but the gorgeous scenery and tranquil atmosphere more than make up for it.

After the earthquake of 1953 the motionstopped. In the recent years, if someone steps on one of the side rocks, he may still feel the vibrations. I have not seen it moving! The sunset is wonderfull.
