The name Los Gigantes (meaning The Giants) needs no explanation. These huge cliffs in Santiago del Teide are part of Teno County Park and tower up to 600 m (1,970 ft) high, plummeting straight down into the sea to create a sight that is dizzying to behold, even from below. At the foot of the cliffs, the ocean floors are some 30 m (100 ft) deep and are home to a wealth of sea life, drawing in divers and deep-sea fishing fans.

Just a few minutes' drive away from the capital, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, lies Anaga Country Park, which has been declared a Biosphere Reserve and has succeeded in preserving its natural assets quite exceptionally. You would not be the first person to be besotted by its beautiful precipitous mountain chain full of sharp peaks. The deep valleys and ravines that cut across it eventually reach the sea, forming a series of beaches where you can take a refreshing dip. The area is also home to a wealth of fauna and flora with plenty of native species.

Getting here is an experience in itself as you will see spectacular scenery all along the way. Once you get here, you mustn't leave before you've gone hiking, kayaking, paddle surfing, diving or mountain biking. There are over 100 kilometres of approved trails to take you deep into the heart of nature. Tenerife's deepest ravines can be found here, where the first inhabitants of Masca built their houses in-between towering rock walls. This picturesque spot houses one of the finest examples of traditional Canarian architecture. Up until just a few decades ago, it was almost entirely isolated from the rest of the Island due to communication difficulties, which means it is exceptionally well-preserved.

This has always been a narrow and remote place, which was only very recently supplied with electricity, and where the roads were barely more than dusty tracks up until not long ago. In fact, for years the only means of communication with the rest of the world was the trail of Camino de los Guanches, linking Masca to Santiago del Teide. But that remoteness is precisely what has allowed it to keep its ancient charm.

The most important streets in the centre of La Laguna are pedestrianised. This allows you to roam them at leisure without worrying about the traffic. You will be glad of it when you realise the time it takes to explore it all. The city has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999 and is considered a “unique example of an unwalled colonial city”. The original 15th century layout remains almost intact, just as it was depicted by Master Leonardo Torriani in his map of La Laguna. The city was also used as a template for the colonial cities founded in America, such as Old Havana, Lima and Cartagena, which is why their houses and streets looks so similar.

Rooftop tent camping

Having a tent on top of your car makes no difference when it comes to parking regulations, which means you can open the tent and call it a day anywhere you can park. But the moment you take a piece of furniture outside you are no longer parking but camping, so take that into account when choosing your spots.

About the rooftop tent

Opening and closing the tent is easy but we will show you a few tricks during the welcome briefing. Last but not least, don't forget the tent is there! The car is around 2,2 meters tall with the tent on so it won't fit into some underground parkings.

Camping 101

Unlike some places like the US, camping in Spain is strictly regulated. This means you cannot set camp everywhere but worry not, we got you covered. The first thing you should do is download the app park4night where you can check plenty of spots around the island to spend the night, with reviews from other campers. We also suggest the app maps.me for offline trails. Just download the map beforehand and plan hiking and driving routes while your phone is on airplane mode. As a rule of thumb, national parks and beaches are usually off-limits, but you can check the app for more info.
