One of Portland’s best-known restaurants, Duckfat serves Belgian fries, creative sandwiches, and milkshakes from two locations: a restaurant on Middle Street and a Frite Shack outside Oxbow Brewing on Washington Ave. Ordering fries is a must—you can get the Sauce Flight, but it’s the truffle ketchup you really want.

If you’re looking for seafood, Eventide should be on your list. The restaurant is known for its raw bar, featuring a dozen different kinds of Maine oysters, and one of the city’s best (and least traditional) lobster rolls. Its sister restaurant Honey Paw, located next door, is also incredible—the caramelized honey soft serve is one of the best things you can eat in Portland. Both restaurants have indoor and outdoor seating, but be prepared for a wait if you don’t have reservations.

One of the best restaurants in Portland, hands down, Central Provisions is all about creative small plates in a cozy atmosphere. We’ve never ordered something that wasn’t absolutely delicious, but we’re partial to the Spicy Beef Salad, the Smoked Carrots, and the Suckling Pig. Indoor seating only. Expect a wait if you don’t have reservations.

Named for its most popular offering, a “slab” of cheese pizza weighing in at 1lb, Slab offers some of the best pizza in Portland as well as a variety of other Sicilian snacks. Everyone should get their own slab, even if it sounds like too much food: it’s so delicious that leftovers are unlikely. Indoor and outdoor seating.

For the best concentration of local beer, spend an afternoon on Munjoy Hill. You’ll find lots of great breweries within a short walk of each other, including Oxbow, Rising Tide, Goodfire, Austin Street, and Lone Pine. If beer isn’t your thing, Urban Farm Fermentory and Root Wild both offer kombucha, and you can find locally made rum and gin at Three of Strong.

Brunch

Speckled Ax has a few locations in Portland, but the closest one to us is the one on Walton Street, which is 1.5 miles away! This location has fewer food choices but some of the best coffee in Portland—it’s wood roasted and seriously delicious. If you’re looking for excellent breakfast sandwiches and pastries, you can also try their Thames Street location.
