It is frequented by locals and travelers alike, yet has more of an "alternative living" beach culture rather than a tourist beach. Kehena Beach is a unique black sand beach nearby on mile marker 19. This beach is great for snorkeling and swimming with the spinner dolphins. It is frequented by locals and travelers alike, yet has more of an "alternative living" beach culture rather than a tourist beach. This beach is one of few unofficial "clothing optional" so we advise your personal discretion.
Isaac Hale Beach Park, also known as Poho'iki Beach used to be the local fishing & surfing spot, which harbored a boat ramp for easy ocean entry. Poho'iki is now the newest black sand beach on island that was formed after the Kilauea eruption in 2018. Poho'iki features vast and visually stunning lava walls enveloping the beach park. The boat ramp is now engulfed with fine black sand created from the reaction of lava flowing into the ocean. It also created several hot ponds that rise and fall with ocean's tide. You can sunbathe on the black sand or soak in the hot ponds but we recommend only experienced surfers and swimmers to take the chance of entering the often volatile ocean currents. Always heed to lifeguard instructions and listen to safety warnings as ocean conditions can change drastically by the day.

Uncle Robert’s is one of the few remaining sovereign Hawaiian family compounds in Kaimu-Kalapana, a town which was buried by lava flows in 1986. Enjoy the popular and entertaining Wednesday Night live music where the uncles come to sing and play the ukulele in their Uncle Robert's Awa Band. You can also explore the informational displays on Hawaiian Sovereignty, and take the walk out to Coconut Beach for sunrise or sunset. Be sure to check out the open air Farmer's Market on Saturday mornings from 8am-12pm in the upper parking area, which features delicious homemade food, produce from local farms, as well as handmade arts & crafts! This is place is a true gem!
