Sightseeing

Kehena Beach is a unique black sand beach nearby on mile marker 19. This beach is great for snorkeling and swimming with the spinner dolphins. It is frequented by locals and travelers alike, yet has more of an "alternative living" beach culture rather than a tourist beach. This beach is one of few unofficial "clothing optional" so we advise your personal discretion.

Isaac Hale Beach Park, also known as Poho'iki Beach used to be the local fishing & surfing spot, which harbored a boat ramp for easy ocean entry. Poho'iki is now the newest black sand beach on island that was formed after the Kilauea eruption in 2018. Poho'iki features vast and visually stunning lava walls enveloping the beach park. The boat ramp is now engulfed with fine black sand created from the reaction of lava flowing into the ocean. It also created several hot ponds that rise and fall with ocean's tide. You can sunbathe on the black sand or soak in the hot ponds but we recommend only experienced surfers and swimmers to take the chance of entering the often volatile ocean currents. Always heed to lifeguard instructions and listen to safety warnings as ocean conditions can change drastically by the day.
