A Day at "A-Bay" @ Your Own Risk & Without Recommendation

In less than 7 miles from Property you can be at the beach relaxing. Hang your hammock in the coconut groves along the shoreline. Visit the Beach Hut on the sand for equipment rentals. Explore historical fish ponds and petroglyphs. Dine with your feet in the sand at Lava Lava Beach club where you can also play ping pong and lawn games. Grab a coffee at Starbucks, pick up souvenirs at Island Gourmet, watch a movie at the luxury theater, catch a free show or activity, enjoy local shaved ice or fish and chips, and don't forget to fill up at Shell.
Tons of public parking and easy beach access with restrooms and outdoor showers (FREE) but no lifeguard. The water here is pleasant and generally calm. Bring water shoes. A-Bay turns into Waikoloa Beach. It's all connected. As you walk north along the shoreline you will come across a foot bridge. On the other side of the shoreline footbridge are a few workout bars. Follow the trail of pictures below to explore this area. GETTING HERE: Queen Ka`ahumanu Highway also called Highway 19 - West on Waikoloa Beach Drive - Left on Ku`uali`l Pl - Parking is on the left before you get to Lava Lava Beach Club.

Historical fishponds line the mauka (inland) side of the shoreline from A`naeho`omalu Bay to Waikoloa Beach. These are FREE to explore, just don't fall in! GETTING HERE: You will automatically see these along A-Bay which you most likely accessed from the parking lot by Lava Lava Beach Club but you can also access the ponds and beaches by parking next to Waikoloa Beach Marriot (4 hour limit/closed 8pm-5am) and follow the sidewalk toward the beach. The gate to the pathway itself is open during beach hours (6am-7pm). To find this parking lot you will take Waikoloa Beach Drive to Kolea Kai Circle on the left which looks like you need a key to get in. Don't drive to the gate. Take an immediate left into the little parking lot.

Best Beaches for A Day @ Your Own Risk & Without Recommendation

Still heading north of Waikoloa Road are the islands top beaches, all within 16 miles of your guest quarters. I have listed them according to which beach you will reach off Hwy 19 first. They are all so close together that it's very easy to bounce around between them by car of course, not on foot although you can hike south from Spencer Beach to get to Mau'umae Beach.
13 miles: Beach 67 & 69. Park and head up the beach to the right on a small trail that opens up into a beautiful beach spot. Locals jump off the rocks here. Some days it’s very rough waters and other days barely any waves. This spot has SHADE, restrooms, outdoor showers, and lots of FREE parking. No lifeguards here.

14 miles: Beautiful sandy beach with massive waves. Turn left off Highway 19 into Mauna Kea resort and tell them you want to go to the beach. They will give you a free parking pass if there is availability. Parking is limited so head up to Hapuna beach if full and if that parking lot is full then Beach 69 or Spencer beach is a good option. If you get in then drive toward the ocean and veer left all the way down past the resort and there will be a little parking area. You will need to walk down the hill from there. Restrooms and showers are at the bottom.
