Neighborhoods

Explore old Törbel, it's winding lanes and ancient traditional Valais mazot. From the Prana Hut you overlook old Törbel or you can head up past the Weisshorn Hotel and get lost in the lanes there, likely finding mountain cats, black and white goats, a few cows and the famous Valais black nose sheep along the way.

Food scene

Excellent Swiss food (I love the rösti and the burgers) and the warmest welcome from the wonderful young owners. The Hotel Weisshorn has an excellent terrace with great views and is just 5 minutes walk from The Prana Hut.

Making the most of Törbel

The closest bus stop to the Prana Hut is Törbel Ueberfeld. Public transport is highly reliable in Törbel as it is serviced by the Swiss yellow Post Bus system but be aware the buses are not so regular and there is a break in the middle of the day when there are no buses up or down the mountain to Stalden Saas. Please use the SBB or the Post Bus app to plan your journeys in advance. In summer there is a bus from Törbel all the way to the Moosalp at the top for those who don't want to hike up and in winter the ski station is serviced with a bus to Z'Nivu Skilift.

Be prepared

Törbel is a beautiful but small working village in high Valais. There is only one supermarket, the Prima which is open Monday - Friday (but not in the middle of the day) and Saturday mornings. It has a good selection of staples, dry goods and sells an excellent local cheese made in the village. It has a limited selection of fresh produce, more choice if you go in the morning. The best place to shop for groceries is in Visp and if you need any non-standard goods then better to bring them with you. Please also bring all hiking and ski gear with you as there are no other shops in Törbel.

Cream cake at the Moosalp restaurant

You absolutely must find your way up to the Moosalp, either via one of the beautiful hiking trails (this is the best way to get there) or via Post Bus or car. Not only will you find a beautifully protected nature wonderland and views of the Weisshorn and the Kleine Matterhorn but you'll find Carmen and Amade, owners of the fabulous Moosalp Restaurant selling their not to be missed home made cream cake. Don't bother to share a slice - you will eat the whole thing!

Best hiking trails

You'll find hiking maps in the kitchen of the Prana Hut and trails are well marked with the yellow signs. The easiest and mostly flat hike is the Panoramaweg (scenic path) that starts just past the Weisshorn Hotel. A bit more challenging is to take the long route up to the Moosalp (start on the Panoramaweg but take the fork left and up the hill early on) and then come back the short way down the ski slop directly behind the Moosalp restaurant. Other hikes include to Bürchen and to the Yak Farm (great for kids although the first and last bits are steeper).
