Food Scene

The Tin Shack is an eclectic "open air" coffee shop/bakery just off the main road in Pahoa. They offer excellent breakfasts, breads and pastries, and coffee and tea drinks. The Eggs Benedict plates are really delicious (the Okinawan is my personal favorite). The ambiance is a bit like the name, it's literally a tin roofed building. Our favorite for coffee and breakfast.

Kaleo's menu is a local comfort food bonanza. Great for both lunch and dinner. Nightly entertainment. This place is popular in the evenings (not a bad idea to call ahead for a dinner reservation), especially on a Saturday night. Prices are reasonable and the food is excellent. I always want to try everything on the menu.

(Closed in Pahoa Village but reopening soon in Puna Kai in Pahoa). Super delicious thin crust New York style Pizza. Our favorite Pizza in the area. They don't serve alcohol, but you can BYO Beer. It's kind of small inside, so not well suited for big groups.

Everybody loves Luquins. The food is good, the prices are good, and the beer is cheap. It's not fancy or gourmet but just solid comfort Mexican plates. Luquins raises their own cattle and you can taste the difference from their ground beef tacos to the fajitas. Really tasty beef. Luquins also has a bar and sometimes has live music.

Local comfort food breakfast diner with Moco Locos, Omelets, and Macadamian Nut Pancakes and Ken's famous coconut, passion fruit, and Guava syrup assortment. They have everything here, but if you're hungry and looking for good breakfast this is the place. Typical american diner (Denny's, iHop) atmosphere. They are open 24/7 and serve lunch and dinner as well. Parking can be tricky and waits can be long during peak hrs.

If you ask locals, they will always mention Pahoa Fresh Fish & Chips. People drive here from all over the east island. Almost zero ambiance, basically a few plastic tables in a butcher shop, but some of the most incredible fresh fish and chips ever. The fish here is super fresh, and they have a great selection that changes daily of cod, mahi, tuna, ono, and more. Great to-go option. Close to home.

Plan your Wednesday around getting to Uncle Robert's in Kalapana in the early evening for the "market". It's the popular wednesday night social "event" in Puna. Everyone is here. It's a farmers market with food vendors, live entertainment, a bar, and more. Great fun, good food, good people, good entertainment. At the end of the "Red Road" (hwy 137) in Kalapana 5pm to 10pm on Wednesday nights.

This is the place that invented the Loco Moco. What else can I say. If you want to experience a Loco Moco from the original, this is the place, and they have many varieties of Loco Moco to choose from. Café 100 is a ”fast diner”, order at the window style with covered patio seating. Moco Loco’s are their specialty but they have all the local Hawaiian comfort foods for lunch and dinner as well. Inexpensive and good. Great for fast local breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Super authentic Italian cuisine with delicious homemade pastas. Many reviews say Paolo's would be a great Italian restaurant in NY or Italy, so amazing in right in Puna. They only serve water so bring your own beer or wine.

This “fine casual” restaurant in downtown Hilo features Hawaiian/American dishes that lean on the healthier side than the typical Hawaiian fried comfort food establishments. Fresh seafood, steaks, pasta and a variety of salads at reasonable prices. One of the best steaks on the Island. The restaurant is in the Historic Kaikodo building built in 1907 as the Hilo Masonic Lodge Hall and was the original home to the Bank of Hilo. There is still a classic old bank vault and an incredible crafted 150 year English bar inside the restaurant. Good food, nice night out, and nice atmosphere. Great for a special night out. $15-$35 Entrees

Paul’s Place is notable for it’s delicious breakfast and lunch, but famous for its size: it is tiny with only three tables and eight seats – reservations are absolutely required, and you have to be prompt or they’ll give your reservation away to the next on the list. But going thru the reservation adventure is worth it. From the Belgian waffles to the Eggs Benedict, to the fresh caught Fish Bowl, Sandwiches, and Salads – everything is fresh, locally sourced and delicious. 808-280-8646 Reservation Required. Open Tue thru Sat 7:30am – 2:00pm. $15 – $20 Entrees

Drinks & Nightlife

La Hiki Ola Kava Bar has a good selection of in-house Kombucha and Jun tea's. While La Hiki doesn't serve any alcohol it does serve the trendy and intoxicating Kava root drinks. La Hiki often has music, and usually pretty good music at that.
