Best mode of travel is car rental. 4x4 recommended. There is a bus, mostly only goes to general areas, have to closely follow schedule. Hilo town rentals are Hertz 808 934-0302, Enterprise 808 934-0359, others are Alamo, Thrifty and Dollar. There is lift and taxis , but can be pricey.
