City/town information

Argostoli is the capital of Kefalonia island. Information on the history of the town but also of the island in general can be found in the laographic museum of the Iakovatios library. There you will see how Argostoli used to look like before almost all the Vinetian-buildings got destroyed with the earthquakes of 1953. In Argostoli the shoping center is mostly located along a pedestrian street called 'lithostrato', while the bars are concentrated around the main square 'Plateia Valianou' and on the water front where the sailing boats are shielded from the open sea.

Lixouri, also called by the locals "the small Paris" is the second biggest city in Kefalonia and the hometown of poet and sarcastic author Andreas Laskaratos. You can reach Lixuri by car (~30 min) or by ferry (20 min) from Argostoli. Ferry run every 20 min or half-hour during summer. In Lixouri, you will find bars, pastry and coffee shops, restaurants and boutique and touristic shops, most of which are located next to the water and around the square.

Sami is the third biggest city of Kefalonia (after Argostoli and Lixouri) and it it also the main port connecting Kefalonia to the main land. The ruins of ancient Sami (800 and 500 bc) is worth a visit even if it is just for the view over the bay, during August when the saristra festival takes place, the place has an amazing vibe. Combine your visit in this town with a visit to Melissani and Drogarati caves, a swim to Antisamos or maybe a hike to Koutsoupia beach and finally a drink to Karavomilos.

The villages of Assos is situated on a small peninsula at the north part of Kefalonia. It's bay is known for sheltering the passing sailboats. With only 100 inhabitants and a couple of taverns and bars, is one of the smallest but charming and picturesque spots of the island. One of the attractions is the ruins of a 16th century Venetian castle and it's definitely worth a visit, so prepare for a long walk among the olive trees. Enjoy a stroll around the tiny narrow roads of the village on your way to where the lighthouse used to be.

For those that have enough time to wonder off the island, consider a day trip to Ithaca, also called Ithaki. A quiet island ideal for those that want to relax and experience the nature. The island is small but full of picturesque beaches and bays. In the south, you will find the main town of Vathi, the main port of Pisaetos, and a few beaches while in the north, there are smaller villages like Stavros, Frikes and Kioni and more beaches. The closest beaches to Vathy are Filiatro, Minimata, Loutsa, Sarakiniko, Dexa and Skino. One of the must things to do is to drive up 600 m to see the panorama overview from the Katharon monastery.

Melissani cave is one rare example of an open cave. The roof fell allowing the sunlight to enter bringing out the amazing colors of the water. The cave is 3.5 km long, 40 m wide and 36m high. The cave is famous for the unique geological phenomenon occuring in Kefalonia where seawater enters in fractures of the rocks in Katavothres (nearby Argostoli) and travels for two weeks subterranean through the island mixing with rainwater only to end up in the Melissani lake. You can visit the cave during summer, from the beginning of May until the end of October, from 9am each morning until 7pm in the evening. I recommend going there around noon for best color effects. Please call 0030 26740 22997 before visiting.

Drogarati cave is over 100 Ma old and it was discovered due to a strong earthquake causing a collapse revealing what is now used as the main cave's entrance. Because of the shape and acoustics in the cave, Drogarati has hosted several concerts and cultural events. It is one of the biggest knwon caves (more than 900 sq.m) and approximately 60 m deep, the temperature is constant around 18 C and the humidity in the cave reaches 90 %. The stalagmites and stalactites are still growing with approximately 1cm over 100 years forming extraordinary shapes. For a quick view check out https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9CDtMdFeKI. Tips: It can be slippery, sneakers are advised. Visting hours are: 1st-19th April Wednesday, Friday & Sunday 110am-15.00pm. 20th -30th April everyday 10.00-16.00, while during summer you can visit the cave everyday from 10am to 17pm and the cost will be 5euros/adult, 4euros/person in a group of over than 10 persons and 3euros/child.

Beaches

Myrtos beach has a wild beauty and it has continuesly been voted as the best Greek beach but also among the best beaches worldwide. The colors of the water change according to the currents that move around the white calcic sediments of the mountain. I recommend to check the weather before going since it can be a dangerous when there are waves. Note that some rocks on the hill are unstable and can suddenly fall hence do not sit right under the cliff and if visiting the cave at the far left side of the beach pay extra attention.

Petani beach has a similar beauty to Myrtos, it is pebbly and sandy. I reccomend to go either earlier during the day when the winds have not changed yet and when you will be able to see through the transparent and amazing blue and green colors of the sea or alternatively around 20.00 to enjoy a late swim and the sunset. At the beach you will find sunbeds, a bar and a shower. Once there I highly recommend Erasmia's restaurant and a drink to Ksouras.

The wild green landscape and the white pebble beach are definitely worth the 40 minute hike! The colors of the water are very similar to myrtos beach but the place still remains wild. If you go there off season before June and after August you have very good chances to be completely alone! Apart from hiking you can also reach fteri by taxi or rental boat by zola. Tips: There is no beach bar so make sure to take water and snacks with you. Although there are multiple paths to reach the beach, some more difficult than other, all need sneakers or hiking shoes (flip flops are not recommended). Since there is not much shade you might want to take an ombrella with you.

Two are the beaches in pessada, the bigger one on your left and the the smaller (and nicer one) further on your right as you come down the stairs. If you see more than 6-8 cars at the parking lot it's better to chose another time to visit these beaches because they are generally small and get easily crowded. The tiny sandy beach further on your right used to be pink because of all the pieces of the colors. To protect the little sand that's left people leave their shoes on the rocks. It has amazing crystal clear water and natural shade after 13.00. Tips: since there is no beach bar, bring water and snacks with you.

A small, unique, pebble beach in the end of a 20 minute trail through the forest valley. One of the most popular sand beaches in Kefalonia and very close to Argostoli, is Makris gialos beach which also means 'The long beach'. Because of that you can either mingle with the crowd at the popular beach bar while also enjoying the sea-sports or find a quitter spot further along the beach and maybe even rent a kayak or stand up paddle to explore the surroundings. My favorite and arguably the most beautiful and pristine beach of the island! Platia ammos is a long and wide sandy and pebbly beach on the bottom of the cliff. It's recommended to access it by water since the staircase has major damages due to the last earthquakes. Before attempting to go down on foot ask the locals on the present condition of the slope. Once down stay away from the cliffs since at any moment stones may fall. It is not an organized beach and thus you will need to take with you a sun-umbrella, water and snacks. It's a must even if you just pass by to enjoy the sunset from the top of the cliff.
