The neighborhood of Sawtelle Japantown (formerly known as Little Osaka) is a true gem of West Los Angeles. The historic area is home to a sizable Japanese American population and is known for the trendy shops and restaurants centered on Sawtelle Boulevard. During World War II, the community was disrupted and lives were uprooted because of the Japanese American internment, one of the darkest chapters in American history. A large number of them resettled in Little Osaka as they reintegrated into society. Today, Sawtelle Japantown is represented not only by its Japanese American postwar settlers and their descendants, but by a diverse set of Asians and other ethnicities and backgrounds. Take a stroll through the neighborhood and shop kitschy boutiques, nosh on delicious multicultural fare and more.

Stretching for more than 30 miles along the Pacific and Highway One, Malibu has achieved almost mythological status among Californian beach towns. Hollywood stars and top athletes live in oceanfront homes here, under an elegant veil of privacy on long stretches of beach, and enjoy front-row seats for surfing and unforgettable sunsets. While it may sound exclusive, there is plenty of Malibu magic for visitors to access too. Considered to have some of the most perfect waves anywhere, Malibu’s Surfrider Beach, just off Malibu Pier, was named the first World Surfing Reserve; nearby Zuma Beach is a sun magnet for locals and families. In winter, Point Dume, at Malibu’s north end, provides an ideal perch for spotting migrating grey whales.

Kids Heaven

From the moment you walk in, Brella’s open, airy space feels like home. Rather, it feels like a dreamy playroom that’s also a learning community that we wish we had in our home. The Playa Vista on-demand childcare center is a community-driven, flexible, here-for-you place you feel comfortable leaving your children, whether you’re facing the back-to-work scaries (kids as young as three months old are welcome) or heading out for date night (on Fridays and Saturdays, kids can hang till 10 p.m.). Designed for the modern family (or even an old-fashioned family that needs childcare once in a while), Brella offers comprehensive childcare that’s accommodating and adaptable: You can design a schedule that works for your family and pay by the hour via an app. Full of blonde wood and soothing colors, the interior is creative, comforting, and best of all, open seven days a week, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and until 10 on Fridays and Saturdays. Born of a desire to create a community and learning environment that nurtures development from infancy to kindergarten, Brella has a library, an art lab, a playground, a garden, and a nursery for the tiniest members. There’s even an area where parents can work, take calls or meetings, or grab a latte while the kids play. Brella is next-level in the childcare world: Beyond providing snacks and diaper changes, it actively works to educate families throughout their children’s development. Also worth checking out: The affordable classes on everything from nursing to sleep training to setting limits.

This open environment gives kids ample space to do what kids do best: romp around. Wild Child is an environment where both kids and parents can enjoy spending time. Filled with ropes, ladders, rockers, and balance beams, the space is well lit, full of light wood and natural elements—a set of hanging bars made from tree limbs, for example. But the game changer here is the way the incredible staff engages the kids in play. Wild Child is currently offering private and small group classes (ten kids, max) at the gym, plus a stellar selection of virtual courses to help them get the zoomies out at home. If you do choose to enroll your child in a class, note that only one parent is permitted in the space per child and all adults must wear face coverings. All CDC guidelines are strictly adhered to.

While the kid-friendly galleries at LACMA are packed with inspiration, on the second floor of Hammer Building you’ll find a space where little ones can actually put brush to paper and make art. While on-site, sign them up for a free LACMA youth membership—they can visit the museum for free whenever they want (and bring one adult guest along).

Though it's an equal draw for car-obsessed adults, this museum—immediately across the street from LACMA—has huge kid appeal. For one, in the third floor Discovery Center they can climb aboard a California Highway Patrol Motorcycle, a Ford Model T, and a racecar. They can also race Hot Wheels and pick up a few tidbits about what makes a car tick.

Located in the back of the Veteran’s Garden, a 20-acre oasis that’s dedicated to rehabilitating vets with PTSD, you’ll find a sanctuary, where injured, abused, and abandoned cockatoos, parakeets, macaws, and parrots can find relief. They’re tended and nursed back to health by veterans, who apparently find a certain satisfaction in helping something so frail get back in the air. It’s open to the public, and the birds love visitors.
