All require reservations. Breakfast in Monterey: the Wild Plum, organic & very fresh food. Beach House at Lover's Point has a cheaper prix fixe menu from 4:-5:30. You have to go in person for that. Otherwise, the Beach House & these others require a reservation. Make it the night before if possible.

Generally good food there. Aquarium on Cannery Row is a must-see, has good cafeteria. Cannery Row is fun but touristy, has a few outlets. Monterey Presidio for history; Point Lobos for hiking right on the ocean. Get there early on weekends for parking). Moss Landing, 30 minutes north on Hwy. 1 has whale watching and kayaking to see the lagoon's wildlife; a few miles south of Carmel on Hwy. 1 is Garapata beach and the valley of the lillies. Twenty-five minutes south of Garapata is Big Sur, where the continent meets the Pacific, land of towering redwoods and dangerous high craggy cliffs. The center of Big Sur is the Deli and the post office. There is hiking and swimming in the Big Sur river in the state park and along Pfeiffer and Molera Beaches. In summer, make room reservations in advance. And drive very carefully!

Small charming village on the ocean with good restaurants and thrift stores, just past Cannery Row. It has a movie theater, one of only two, the other being Cinemark at Del Monte Center.
