Just across the road from the Art Café and up a little you will find Harry’s Inn. Run by an English guy called Spencer, this is a great place for a drink, they often have live music playing too. It is a very inviting place with wooden floors and plenty of plants and trees dotted around the establishment and is isolated from the loud sound of the town’s traffic. As you head along the Airport Road into Larnaca, you will no doubt spot the Blue Pine Bar and Restaurant just before you reach the turning by the American Academy School. This bar is very, very popular, even in winter, however the drinks are a little more pricey than other bars, but the food is very good and plentiful. The garden has a very spacious covered section and another smaller open-air section with heaters for the winter. Therefore the garden is open all year round. The inside of the bar is very dimly lit and cosy with a different feel to outside, but both are good and the music is great. 3 Louki Pieridi, Larnaca, Tel: + 357 (24) 646553 www.thebluepine.com

The mountainous village of Lefkara is split into Pano Lefkara and Kato Lefkara (higher and lower Lefkara), and is world-renowned for its traditional handicrafts of lace embroidery and filigree silver. The village is situated at the foot of the Troodos Mountains in the south eastern region, 650 m above sea level, 43 km from Larnaca, and can be reached by following the A5, A1 and E105 route. The village took its name from the lime stone rocks of the region (Lefka Ori – White Mounts – Lefkara). Its character is very picturesque with narrow, winding streets and traditional architecture of old, terracotta-roofed houses. The women of the village are often sat outside their picturesque homes, creating the world-renowned ‘Lefkaritika’ lace pieces that have been made in the village since Venetian times and are on the UNESCO Intangible World Heritage List. Visitors can learn all about the lace and the village’s second craft of delicate filigree silver pieces at the Lefkara Handicraft Centre, the Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmithing, and various workshops, where you can watch craftsmen at work. Among the village’s other interesting sites are the Local Ethnological Museum of Traditional Embroidery and Silversmith-work the old fountain, the old olive mill and Oliva Terra – Ktima Sofokleous, where you can stroll through the olive tree orchards and learn all about the island’s ‘liquid gold’. The village also has beautiful and ancient chapels, including the church of Timios Stavros (Holy Cross), and the chapel of Archangelos Michail in Kato Lefkara, with frescoes that date from the 12th and 15th centuries. The popular annual Lefkara Festival takes place each August, and includes a programme of music, dance, theatre and handicraft exhibitions, with visitors warmly welcomed. The village is also included as one of the stops on the island’s 7th Wine Route that encompasses the area of mountainous Larnaka – Lefkosia (Nicosia).

Located 40 km from Larnaca, in-between Larnaca, Lefkosia and Lemesos (Limassol), Zygi is famous on the island for its fishing shelter and fresh fish restaurants, and is built on the beach. The village can be reached by following the main road to Mazotos hugging the coast for about 25-30 minutes. It is a beautiful drive and well recommended especially on a Sunday when the local Cypriots all gather for their traditional fish meze there. The village took its name from the Greek word for weigh (zygizo), as locust-bean exporters brought the beans to Zygi to be weighed and delivered to the storehouses. Zygi’s main attraction is its fishing shelter, which is surrounded by good quality fish taverns, many of which also have children’s facilities and attract diners from all over the island. A very famous restaurant in Zygi is The Captains Table, this is quite expensive, but worth a visit. The picturesque fishing shelter and new marina is popular for a stroll after a meal, whilst visitors can also take a traditional fishing trip where the fishermen tell tales of the sea as they demonstrate the old fishing methods. Every year on September 17, a festival is held in honour of Agios (Saint) Eracledios, whose quaint church is located on the edge of the community. The church is believed to have originally been built around 1800 by immigrants from Asia Minor who settled in the area, as confirmed by graves found in the nearby cemetery.

Tochni is a beautiful village located, about halfway between the cities of Larnaca and Limassol; you can find it just inland a little from Zygi on the way up to Lefkara. Prior to 1974, Tochni had a mixed Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot population. In August 1974, 85 Turkish Cypriot inhabitants of this village and of neighbouring villages were massacred by Greek Cypriot militias. There are the ruins of a Latin church in the centre of the village, overlooking the Orthodox church of St Constantine and Helena. The current church has been reconstructed on the site of the original, over a bridge, said to have been founded by St Helena on return from the Holy Land having brought with her a piece of the True Cross. There is also a mosque, madrasah and Muslim burial ground in the eastern part of the village, though these are in varying degrees of disrepair. Today the village has been designated a beautiful 'agro tourism' location which promotes the restoration of the original village house in order to preserve the traditional Cypriot stone houses. The majority of properties use 'Tochni Stone' which is quarried nearby. You can also rent a bike and explore the nearby countryside

Larnaka’s most famous promenade of Finikoudes Beach is a 600-metre long stretch that combines the beach, entertainment and culture along its palm-tree lined length. The sands are fine and varying shades of brown and beige, and the seawaters are calm and shallow, flanked by the marina with its pier and fishing harbour on the one end, and a second pier and the Medieval Fort at the other. Facilities on the beach include toilets, showers, changing rooms, sun beds, umbrellas, dustbins, recycling bins and beach bar, whilst the strip is also lined with cafes, bars, restaurants, kiosks, hotels and entertainment establishments, as well as benches and abundant greenery. The beach also offers disabled access, including a special wheelchair at the lifeguard tower to help disabled persons enter the sea with assistance from the lifeguards. Various forms of marine life are sometimes visible in the deeper waters, including sea bass, sea bream, parrot fish, grey mullet, crabs and octopus, whilst these can be better seen by taking a cruise or fishing trip from the pier. Diving expeditions are also available from the pier. The beach is home to various water sports, and also hosts major sporting tournaments on its sands, as well as concerts on its Seafront Stage and two main squares – one with fountain and benches.
