Food Scene

The food and service is excellent. Chef Eric has created wonderful dishes for vegetarians and meat eaters alike. It's a very cozy environment and you may need to wait a bit to get a seat...but it's well worth it! They are only open till 2pm as they specialize in Breakfast and brunch.

On Friday nights through the summer and into fall the "Night Market at the Pier" is great for live music, loads of food trucks and local artisans selling their treasures. So fun! There are restaurants, great walks on the pier, more of some earlier evening fun. If you want more of a party scene with dancing, drinking and bars then hop on the Seabus over to Gas town and you'll find lots of excitement there.

Proud coffee snob? You'll soon be!!! Vancouver has some brilliant roasters and these guys have been doing it right for years. It's a 5 min drive and a locals only destination right at the roasting facility. Small ethically purchased batches from a global community. They supply some of Vancouver's best 5 star restaurants. They also bake Thomas Haas croissants... Just go already!

Indian Fusion is an interesting name... Because it's not really fusion. It's just amazing fresh spice and clean prepared Indian food. Nothing's been boiled until it's turned to greyish paste. The textures and sauces are fresh it's just perfect. Is that fusion? Fresh clean and delicious? The interior and location are okay, but the food makes up for it. It's a mom and pop shop that are doing it right. Last call is 10:00 which is pretty good for Sleepy Hollow ;)

Paleo diet? Screw you... I visited the real Mount Royal Bagel Factory in Montreal in the late 80's. It was nothing like this. It was a dive. Painted powder blue and dirty, florescent light blasting into the night. There was a 65 yr old guy with cigarette hanging from his bottom lip as he slid cord after cord of hardwood onto the decades old fire brick oven. It was 100° scorching hot in there which made the 90° sticky humid evening rather cool. At 4am you'd signal him to buy a few deformed dough swirls to soak up the evenings outing and sober up. It was magic. Now this shop... Bagels I'd say are a 6/7 out of ten (unless you're Jewish)

Gastown is hipster central. In the armpit of Gastown lies a gem that smells of Slow organic cooking, hand made sourdough crust, excellent espresso and beautiful baked things. Kombucha on tap, slow poached egg on barley w/ pickled roots... Hipster hippy. One of my favorites... Very well priced too!

For a night on the town? My dear friends Nico and Karri own this gem of a night spot and watering hole. It's been rated Vancouver's top 5 for almost a decade. Belgian fare famous for more than Muscles and Beer. Amazing breakfasts and weekend brunches and a great outdoor patio. Heeeey... Lottsa meat. Any vegans in the house best eat your tempeh before and wear a respirator.

Another Swiss chocolatier / patisserie on the Shore? These guys do it up well for the West Van community. I like Thomas Haas a little better but in a blind taste test? It's all in the branding. Great location, more seats and a nice little patio. Great coffee of course!

A Japanese restaurant owned by a Japanese guy... Blasphemy!!! Reasons we love Yohachi Sushi? Immaculate Sushi and Sashimi They have Japanese stuff on the menu that I ate as a kid and no one serves. Try the Dobon Mushi! They grate fresh wasabi (Who even knew it was a plant!!!) Great location on Lower Lonsdale a short 5 min walk from the Seabus.

Central Lonsdale hub! Great wifi and work stations for you laptop gypsy office-less nomads. Coffee is pretty good, food is good for it's price point. They have another shop at Park and Tilford which is very nice and much closer. That shop also has a meeting room that you can book for $15 per hr (It can seat about 12) I just like the buzz at the Lonsdale shop regarding working and community that hangs there. Their baked goods could use an upgrade as the competition is getting pretty darn high.

Parks & Nature

A magical place to go, you can choose from many trails that are family friendly. Lots of places to stop and take in the glacier fed waters...consider bringing your bathing suit as there are spots to take a dip.

A sweet spot on the North shore with great cafe's, local shopping, spectacular hikes or beach time. Take a picnic, rent a kayak or paddle board or head into the forest on the Baden Powel trail. You definitely make a day of it! Go early as parking can be tricky.

Maybe one of the Northshore's best gems. Access amazing hikes through some old growth trees that are jaw dropping. The hikes navigate the beautiful coast line cliffs and beaches. I once brought a photo team from Outside Magazine there for a product photoshoot. They were all city peeps from NYC. When they came to a few big trees for the 1st time, (15' Diameter at their trunk) they just stopped. Stood silent for an uncomfortable amount of time. I think a few of them started to cry. Avoid weekends, go early or late afternoon. Bring snacks there are no concessions. The hikes are accessible for most, but not for wheelchairs or strollers.

Shopping

I can't say enough about this locally owned boutique. Meghan has curated such lovely items from children's toys, woman's clothes, jewelry, pottery and more. Head next door to Ahoy for more masculine and nautical feel and don't miss a jaunt across the street to the sunny side for tea, locally made popsicles and stunning textiles. All 3... same owner, different flavors, awesome experience.

Need an amazing florist who is doing some really beautiful work? This little shop is a gem and its 4 blocks away. Don't expect a FTD red carnation special. The ladies there are hipsters with a great eye. They've curated a bunch of other really cool things too that you probably won't expect at the typical shopping plaza shop. http://www.smflowers.net/

A Mom and Pop Organic Grocery Shop. On 7th and Queensbury which will soon be discovered as a high energy vortex similar to Sedona and Stonehenge. Nice and a stones throw away! It's a little more expensive than Whole Foods, but you'll save the money not having to drive there and pollute the atmosphere contributing to global warming and the sad state of the polar icecaps. Good choice!

Also the North Vancouver Museum and Archive. The Presentation house is moving this year to a beautiful location next to the Lonsdale Quay. Designed by Vancouver's Patkau Architects... Its going to be the coolest building on the Northshore. The Gallery specialized in photo based work for a while but the new mandate might have changed. http://presentationhousegallery.org/
