Sounio - At the end of the Sounio Peninsula at the southernmost point of Attica, lies the Temple of Poseidon within a fort that protects the coast of Attica. Made entirely of white marble, it was erected in the middle of the 5th century BC and built to honor Poseidon, God of the sea. You will be mesmerized by the blankets of blues, reds, and oranges that engulf the temple as the sun descends into the sea. British poet Lord Byron was one of many who fell under its spell, composing poetry in its honor and has his name carved on one of its iconic marble pillars (although who did this is debatable).

Sounio - This is a remote beach that requires visitors to go down about 100 stairs. It's by far the clearest free beach in Athens but it's not organized whatsoever. You'll need to bring everything yourself. Unfortunately, it's becoming immensely popular but in September things seem much better, with visitors decreasing in numbers dramatically. Very recommended place for off-summer swims. Not that it's not recommended for children because water depth increases suddenly near the bay.

Thoriko, Lavrio - Initially excavated in 1886, the ancient theatre of Thorikos has attracted much attention due to its unusual layout. Its irregular oval auditorium and almost rectangular orchestra, whether reflecting the early date of the theatre or the gradual development of its seating capacity, renders this theatre a unique sample of the architectural evolution of ancient Greek theatres. Pieces of inscribed marble found nearby record names of sponsors (choregoi) and winning protagonists in dramatic competitions as well as details on the assignment of a choregia, that is the total expenditure for producing a performance of tragedy or comedy undertaken by a wealthy Athenian citizen (known as choregos). All these remnants offer glimpses that enable visitors to conjure up the artistic, religious, and civic activities that took place at the theatre which was located within the vibrant ancient settlement of Thorikos.

Brauron - The sanctuary of Artemis at Brauron is an early sacred site on the eastern coast of Attica near the Aegean Sea in a small inlet. The inlet has silted up since ancient times, pushing the current shoreline farther from the site. A nearby hill, c. 24 m high and 220 m to the southeast, was inhabited during the Neolithic era, c. 2000 BCE, and flourished particularly from Middle Helladic to early Mycenaean times (2000–1600 BCE) as a fortified site (acropolis). Occupation ceased in the LHIIIb period, and the acropolis was never significantly resettled after this time. This gap in the occupation of the site lasted from LHIIIb (13th century) until the 8th century BCE. Brauron was one of the twelve ancient settlements of Attica prior to the synoikismos of Theseus, who unified them with Athens.

Nea Makri - The existence of ancient ruins in the locality of Mikro Elos (Small Marsh) of Brexiza has been noted by early travelers, who also refer to the area as Nissi (island). In 1792 the French Consul in Athens, L.S. Fauvel, drew the ruins of the area, on an islet cut off from the land by a canal. The excavations have revealed the extensive complex of the Egyptian gods' sanctuary and the luxurious bathhouse (balneum), as well as a large ellipsoidal cistern further to the south. The complex was founded by Herodes Atticus, around 160 AD. The great orator, sophist, and benefactor hailed from Marathon and resided here, and the complex was possibly established within his estate. The sanctuary can be identified as “the sanctuary of Canopus” referred to by Herodes’ biographer Philostratus (2nd-3rd cent. AD). In founding it, Herodes imitated Emperor Hadrian, who had built a Serapeion on an artificial islet at Tivoli, close to Rome, modeled on the Serapeion of the town of Canopus on the Nile Delta.

The beach of Kaki Thalassa is organized, and one of the most popular in southeastern Attica. On one side there is a vertical rock that is used for climbing. A little east of the settlement is the homonymous monastery of old calendars. According to Greek Mythology when the barbarians attacked Greece, Zeus and Hades dragged the shores so they could talk and left the seawater in between. As the Greeks were few in number, Zeus and Hades helped them by asking Poseidon to send waves there larger than the ships of the barbarians. Since then, it is said that even Hades defended the Greeks. Since then, the sea in the area of Keratea was named Kaki Thalassa.

You’ll hear it also called Vromopoussi In fact; its name comes from the Albanian word pussi which means well, i.e. Bromopigado (dirty well). However, it is now customarily called Kalopigado. But it’s not the name that makes this beach special. It is much more, it's the sandy beach and its clear blue and crystal-clear waters that attract you.
