Big Bear’s history at 1845 began when Benjamin Davis Wilson rode into Yuhaviat (what Serrano Native American word meaning “Pine Place”) Valley with 20 men and found the place crawling with grizzly bears.
Big Bear Lake was also the Mecca for gold mining. In 1860, William Holcomb discovered gold in the back country of Big Bear. That’s where Southern California’s largest gold rush began!
