We have a no waste rule. We are serious about not producing waste and we hope our guests will be too. Our restaurant produces very little waste and all trash that does come into our lodge, we use it for eco-bricks and other creative projects.

Indian Nose - Luis will pick you up at our road entrance in his tuk tuk  for Sunrise, at 4am, you will drive to Santa Clara then take a short hike to the Indian Nose, spectacular sunrise and see the whole lake. Or he offers day time hikes.  Cost 150 Q per person.

Nature Reserve - Walk along the lake, on the right hand side pathway, entrance 15q, kayaks to rent and a great place to jump into the lake and swim.

Coffee tours : Contact Tim Reher owner of Shangri-la Atitlán  We use his Fair trade coffee at the lodge. Tim helps coffee farmers roast their coffee.

Getting to San Marcos

Walk in 20/25 minutes from Maya Moon (turn right at the top pathway) or take the boat.

Boat: Public boats stop every 20 minutes from our private dock, the boat comes from Panajachel from the left side of the lake, you will see the boat coming from around the peninsula, then you have 6 minutes to get on the dock and flag the boat down, costs 5q and takes 5 minutes to get to San Marcos.

Last boat back to Maya Moon Lodge from San Marcos at 5:40pm.

Tuk tuk to or from San Marcos: In the day time it is easy to stop a tuk tuk going into San Marcos. 10Q a person. Just walk to the top of the lodge to road, the road to the right goes to Tzununa, to the left San Marcos.

Night time tuk tuk: We recommend ringing Nacho (3184-8246) Ismael (4919-3825) or Oscar ( 5899-0111 ) from Tzununa.  

 Or Luis Tuy Tuy from San Marcos: (4508-1604) . After dark the price is approx 20 Q a person or  a minimum of 30Q upwards

Hiking - great hike to Jaibalito through the hills on the lakeside, fantastic views.

We highly recommend a guide. We recommend Luis who also leads tours to The Indian Nose and to Tzununa Waterfall. See above.

Two ATM’s - one on left hand side just up from boat dock. Or at Banrural near the market, ask a tuk tuk to take you there. 5Q per person.

  Walk up the hill to the top of the cathedral for amazing view of town, good pictures, usually give local man 10Q to let you in.

Hike San Pedro volcano : 100Q entrance.  Go to San Pedro then arrange with a tour operator or when you get off the boat there is small office.


Tienda Joanna’s- basic groceries.

Health food store for imported and  holistic products. Take the first right after walking up the hill from the boat dock.  It’s on the right hand side.

Street mercado for fruits, veggies - walk straight up from the boat dock.

Santa Catarina

Very small local village on the lake, near Panajachel.

Getting to Santa Catarina:

Take camion (pick up truck) from Panajachel  for 5-8Q. in front of the supermarket La Despensa Familiar. Turn right on Calle Principal towards the bridge. 


San Antonio

Small indigenous village, women dressed in stunning blue hupils & hair worn in colourful wraps. Beautiful hand crafted, painted ceramics & weaving.

Getting to San Antonio:

Carry on past Santa Catarina in the public  small pickup , costs another 3-5Q. 

There are no public boats -if you want to take a boat, you will have to hire private boat from the Santiago or Panajachel  dock

Batz - small store of well made textile products using natural dyes. From the boat, walk up to the church, turn right & it’s at the end of the road on the corner on the left.

Getting there to San Juan: 

By boat to San Juan - 15Q. The last boat back to Maya Moon Lodge is at 5pm 

It's a 25 minute walk or 10 Q Tuk tuk ride between San Pedro and San Juan. The last boat from San Pedro is 5.30pm.

A tuk tuk from San Juan to Maya Moon is 60Q before the last boat leaves (much more afterwards!) - it takes about an hour and is a bumpy (but interesting) ride.

We recommend a visit to San Juan then take a tuk tuk 10Q a person to explore San Pedro, good day trip.

Biggest town on the lake, different view and feel, huge central square and great selection of local, artisan goods, good market, home of Maximon.ATM. Traditional clothes worn in this village.

Things to do

Maximon - local idol/deity… Buy alcohol/cigarettes to pay respects sold at a local, family house near Maximon. Just ask a tuk tuk to take you to house, every year Maximon is moved to a secret location. Not to be missed.

Cerro de Oro - easy day hike. Arrange private boat.

Getting to Santiago

Take boat to San Pedro, then walk 20 minutes or take tuk tuk to the Santiago dock. Boats leave from there every hour, usually 15 past the hour, costs 30Q.  *NB keep in mind the last boat leaves San Pedro at 5.30 pm, so you need to leave enough time to get to that dock. Or you can take a direct boat to Panajachel (30-35q) and boats from Panajachel  to Maya Moon leave later - 6 and 7:30pm.

We can arrange a private boat to Santiago.


Central tourist hub, great shopping, lots of restaurants, banks, moneygram, western union, ATM, place to catch shuttles and chicken buses. 

Ask at reception to book shuttles to most places in Guatemala.

Things to do

Panajachel high street - a very good alternative if you’ve no time to go to Chichicastenango market. Panajachel high street offers the best value of local artesania goods, much cheaper than Antigua. 

Market : Take a tuk tuk 5q each to the colourful local market.

Abracadabra - Unique gift shop. On the high street towards the lake on the left hand side.

Nature Reserve : Two different ziplining options for additional fees. Take a tuk tuk from Panajachel to get there. 10q per person.

Butterfly Nature Reserve - 40Q entrance fee, monkeys and butterflies.In the Nature Reserve.

Hotel Atitlan - Go for lunch has beautiful gardens, parrots and peacocks. 70 Q to get in but taken from lunch bill, take a tuk tuk from Panajachel.(10 Q ) per person.)The hotel is near the Nature Reserve, good day out. Great views.

Jasmin - delicious food (including vegetarian selection) in beautiful setting. On Calle Santander.

Deli Llama del Fuego - same menu as Jasmin.  Also on Calle Santander

Boat 20Q   From our private dock first boat at 6.20 am  then every 20 minutes.   

  Accommodation: Great selection of fully furnished houses for rent nightly and weekly rates. Good for couples, groups  and families.


Huge Local market on Thursday & Sunday, selling traditional products.

Getting to Chichicastenango:

We can book  a shuttle service which leaves Pana at 8 am and then leaves Chichi at 2pm - round trip costs $12. (Take a 7am or 7.20am boat)

NB If you don't have time to go to Chichi, you can go to Panajachel Calle Santander Street you will find great gifts and the same traditional mayan products, or for a smaller traditional  (but still impressive) market go to Solola take chicken bus from Pana, 20 minute trip for 5Q

Private Boat / lake tours / emergency trip to Santiago hospital - Freddie - 58591816       The only emergency access to a Dr. would be to ring for a private boat to go to Santiago Hospital.

Shuttle service is door to door, so they take you to the hotel or your destination address.  We need address and telephone number of your destination to book.

From Panajachel  :First public leaves our dock at  6.20 am  

then every 20 minutes.  Takes approx half an hour. Cost 25q 

The travel company is called Xocomil and is directly up from the public dock in Panajachel a yellow building on the corner  (80 metres). It has WiFi and you can safely leave your bags there and go into Panajachel high street which is on the right hand side road, just follow the road, you will find ATM machines and a wonderful street market.   

See public shuttle times then book at reception the day before or before 5pm.

Maya Moon Lodge ay magkasamang nilikha nina Chris at Fiona na dumating sa Lake Atitlán sa simula ng 2001 at umibig sa lugar. Kapwa sila nagpasya na bisitahin muli, at sa kalaunan noong 2006, nanirahan sila sa lawa. Sa loob ng isang taon natagpuan nila ang piraso ng lupa na ito na baog na walang kuryente o tubig na tumatakbo. Mahigit dalawang taon na ang lumipas bago sila makatira sa property, bahagi ng panahong iyon kung saan sila nakatira sa Panajstart}, San Francisco, Jaibalito, Tzuná, at isang trailer van. Wala alinman sa Chris o Fiona ang nagsalita ng anumang Spanish at hindi pa kailanman nasangkot sa pagbuo ng ari - arian ng anumang uri, hinahayaan mag - isa sa isang dayuhang bansa kung saan ang mga nayon ay nagsalita doon ng mga lokal na dialect, tulad ng Kaqchickel. Ito ay dapat na pag - aaral ng curve para sa lahat ng kasangkot! Sa simula, napakasimple ng mga layunin: kuryente at supply ng tubig. Ang kanilang bahay sa tabi ng tuktok na pasukan ng raod ay orihinal na isang garahe at ang mga may - ari ay naninirahan nang ilang sandali sa kanilang camper van sa labas ng harap. Ang garahe at kalaunan ang Casa Suena ay itinayo ng lawa.
