Skopelos, Magnesias, Greece

This beautiful, ecological Greek island escape is perfect for those looking for peace, quiet and some well deserved downtime. A collection of 3 villas, Villa Vouno (the mountain) is situated on the gorgeous island of Skopelos, and is just 5 minutes drive from the unspoiled hill village of Glossa with its shops, cafes, tavernas, and bars .The port of Glossa - Loutraki - is close by as are a number of beaches just a short drive from the Villa. The whole area in this secluded part of the island is known for its beautiful pine forest, wooded valleys, coves , beaches and blue clear waters. From Villa Vouno you can see much of the island and beyond as the view spans from Evia on the mainland to Skiathos, Volos, Mount Olympus and Alonissos island. The perfect vista to enjoy the evening sun with a drink and a swim in the gorgeous pool, or to look at whilst doing a yoga practice to start your day.

From the house there are some magical walks, even to the Mama Mia chapel at the bottom of the mountain. I’ll get to those in more detail soon but let me give you some history on this beautiful hideaway.

I’ve been coming to Skopelos island with my family for 20 years now, at first it started as a lovely holiday. But I fell in love with the island more and more with each visit. I knew, with my love for art and former life in interior design, I could create something really beautiful here and carve out a legacy for me, and my family, to enjoy. So I started to look for the most idyllic place I could to start our Greek dream.

After some searching we found a piece of land right at the top of the island, thorn bushes and scrubland was all you could see. But that view. I’ll never forget the first time I saw it. The sea surrounding all sides, with forest and mountain paths crisscrossing the hillsides. It was perfect.

Over the next few years I designed the house myself to be ecological and sustainable, so inspired by the landscape. Then we began to transform the land from arid scrub into a building site and then into the beautiful houses you see today. It’s been a long, often arduous process, but I made so many local friends along the way, as well as learning the Greek language. And it’s all been so worth it, and now I present that labour of love to you.

As well as being an amazing escape for you, it’s a learning experience for me too – I’m looking to ensure that you have all the amenities you could possibly need, so please be honest with your feedback and let me know if there are things you needed throughout your stay as I’m going to put my heart and soul into improving the houses all the time.

To that end, and if you’re only having a short stay, the last thing you want is to be spending too much time orientating yourself. So to help you I have put together a guide of local restaurants, attractions, sites and places to visit. Whatever your personal preferences there’ll be something there for you. Please see the Guidebook for the listing to find out more.

I'm also listing some useful local information here for you, just to help you get used to the Greek Island lifestyle.

The closest local shops and amenities are in Glossa. The local Supermarket is run by Yiannis and his family. They sell fruit, veg, wine, milk, yoghurt, etc and it's open all day in main season. This is just on the main road into town on the left hand side.

There's a bakery and café Kira Leni (Aunty Helen)run by the lovely Eleni, which is a bit further past the supermarket on the other side of the road. They freshly bake bread every morning and also have biscuits, pastries and honey. So if you have a sweet tooth, that's the place for you.

There's also a butchers, a chemist and a cash point located in that area. Cash is an important thing to have on the island there is another down in Loutraki port next to Natura Hotel.

Please remember that shop hours in general are 0900-1400 and 1800-2100 hrs although during July and August some stay open all day.

When shopping if you can take bags/baskets with you to help the environment, then that's ideal. Skopelos now has recycling bins for cardboard, plastic and glass.
ALL WASTE SHOULD BE TAKEN DOWN TO GLOSSA. General waste can be placed in any green bin on the main road. Recycling bins are outside the Supermarket.

Outside of the Guidebook listings here are some other little bits and pieces of information:

Again Glossa is the closest town to Villa Vouno with Loutraki a little further down the hill (where you arrive on the boat). In Glossa there are a few little tavernas. Walk up to the taverna in the square at the top of the village(Platea) for a little exercise and some great food. Closest to the house at the entrance to Glossa (by the supermarket and bakery) there is a Iliovasilima (means romantic sunset)Taverna which has a rotisserie and also serves oven baked dishes and salads. Also probably the most famous restaurant on the island is in the centre of Glossa village -Agnanti has amazing views and is a little more upmarket from the normal tavernas. Loutraki has some lovely tavernas too, some of which are right on the sea front (to the right when you reach the bottom of the hill into Loutraki)Such as Flisvos Taverna where they keep sacks of live mussels in the sea right next to your table. Also there are some nice hotels there with lovely sea views (to the left at the bottom of the hill into Loutraki). You would park at the bottom of the hill and then walk in whichever direction you'd like.

The village of Elios is also quite close to Villa Vouno and is a useful place for drinks and food. There is also a beautiful beach there in Hovolo with its white sand and turquoise water. A favourite fish taverna is Captain Spiros who has his own trawler and you can select your own fish to be weighed, priced then grilled. Also there are tavernas O'Tassos, Manolis and Vangelis and inside the village Platea which is excellent and very traditional grill taverna. Also on the south shore of the village is Mandalaki bar which is very popular

Panormos, the ancient capital of the island ,also has a fantastic beach it's a lovely pebble beach with some great restaurants but be sure to get there early as it's very popular with both locals and tourists. There's quite a shabby chic vibe to it, but if you're after something a little more fancy, The Adrina Beach Resort and Spa has it all with great views of the beach. It's approximately halfway between Glossa and Skopelos Town.

In terms of great activities, you can hire a boat for the day from Niko at the marina in Elios. This is the best way to see the island from the sea and to be able to swim and snorkel. There's a large selection of different boats to take from the harbour front in Skopelos Town.

If you'd like something a bit closer to home, you can paddleboard or kayak from Elios or Panormos. A slightly less time intensive and relaxed way to see the island. If you can stand up on the paddle board that is!

If some culture is what you're after then look no further than the religious iconography of the island. Skopelos a great number of monasteries, some of which are listed in the Guidebook and there are 365 churches on the island, so there shouldn't be a shortage to see.

In terms of additional beaches, there's Milia and Kastani which are slightly more 'sophisticated' with umbrellas, loungers and bars. But really any beach on the island is a lovely place to be!

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to get in touch via the listing.

My host Anthoula will be available to meet and greet you and support you throughout your stay. Pre-booking during July and August is advised for car rentals. Magic Cars are very good and will make you a better price if you tell Yianni or Ildi where you are staying. As the last 1.8km are on an un metalled road I would suggest a four-wheel drive car or motorbike or strong moped.
