Year-round studio cottage at West Arm Narrows of Lake Nipissing. Quiet area. On the edge of hundreds of acres of Crown Land, yet close to a provincial highway.
In autumn and spring, kayak or canoe, hike, bird-watch, sit on the dock or by the fire and watch the stars at night, fish,
In winter, snow-shoe or cross-country ski, watch the birds and the stars at night, ice fish, make a fire.
Swim, kayak, canoe, sit on the dock, fish, hike in summer.
Please bring your own campfire (firepit) wood.

Ang tuluyan
This cottage is part cottage-country, and mostly wilderness. There aren’t many places that are unspoiled and this close to a provincial highway, within an hour’s drive of two major Northern Ontario cities (Sudbury, North Bay) and a morning or afternoon drive from Toronto.
Lake Nipissing enjoys a unique advantage in that there are very few cottages on this part of this large lake, compared to hundreds of acres of Crown Land, which border so much of the shoreline.
So come and be reminded of what it is to live with nature.

French River, Ontario, Canada

Like most of Northern Ontario, our area is part anglophone, part francophone, and part indigenous. All 3 cultures co-exist here.
Indigenous people, mainly Ojibwa, have lived here for centuries. Their villages were on Lake Nipissing, and the French River. The lake and river were their highways.

The area is known as the place where French explorers such as Samuel de Champlain and Etienne Brulé and, later, coureurs du bois passed through on their way to the Great Lakes and to western Canada, trading with indigenous people for beaver pelts.
Today, indigenous people live primarily in Garden Village (Sturgeon Falls), Nipissing First Nation (North Bay), and on Dokis First Nation (Monetville).

The French River Visitor Centre, located on Hwy 69, just south of the French River bridge, houses an interactive exhibit which teaches the history of this area. It is well worth a visit, if you have the time.

The first French family in this area was the Monette family. Cyrille and Odile Monette came to this area in 1895 from Saskatchewan. Originally from Montreal, Cyrille was a classmate and friend of Louis Riel. It is believed that the family came here to hide, fleeing from the chaos caused in the aftermath of the Riel Rebellion. In fact, Cyrille’s family name was really Boisvert. It is believed that the family took the Monette name to evade the authorities. (Monette was Louis Riel’s wife’s maiden name.)
There is a monument to Cyrille Monette located just past the golf course, between Monetville and Noelville.

Later, francophone people from Québèc came to this area to help log the forests for timber and to work in the mines in the Sudbury area, when nickel and copper was discovered there.

My own family immigrated to this area. My father’s family came here from Northern Michigan in 1906, and my mother’s family came to Sudbury from Finland in 1922.
