We are sisters, born and raised in Chicago. Then we came to our senses, ditched our snow shovels, and moved south to Texas. We never in our wildest dreams imagined we would own a house on the beach!
We attribute our good fortune to our dear father, Papa “Crow” George, who was the first in our midwestern family to discover the magical island of Galveston. Back in the 90’s, he ventured down here one summer to take a marine biology Elderhostel class at Texas A & M, and stumbled upon some of the magical delights of the area: feeding the gulls while enjoying a ride on the Bolivar Ferry, hanging out on the fishing piers watching the shrimpers as their ships slowly move along the horizon, picking up seashells along the beach. Papa Crow travelled down to Galveston a few more times with us and his grandkids, stayed in some fine rental houses, and enjoyed every visit.
We never, ever considered investing in a second home - so many of the homes in Galveston are too big, or too far from the water - but some how the stars aligned, fate smiled down upon us - and we found the Nest! It was as if the house was trying to find us - and connect us back to all of the good times we had with our dear father. We believe that it was Papa Crow’s spirit and memory that lead us here. Our time here is filled with peace and special moments. Every time we are here, we raise a glass to him, and say, “Papa Crow would’ve loved this.”
In life away from the beach, Suzanne is an administrator and librarian for a school district, and Monica is a writer and mother. When at the beach, we both do our share of reading and writing, as well as cooking and playing card games like cribbage, spades and gin. We are fascinated by the rich history of the island and suggest visitors go down to the Strand and tour some of the historic houses to understand how this little community rebuilt itself after the devastating hurricane of 1900, and then again after Hurricane Ike. We also enjoy the monthly Galveston Art Walk, and the many annual festivals like Shrimp Fest, Dickens on the Strand and of course, Mardi Gras!
The Crows’ Nest is calling you - come discover this magical, peaceful end of the island!
