Welcome to your Maui getaway! Whether it's a romantic trip or some alone time on the beach, it's a perfect place to snuggle up and relax. 50 feet from the ocean, the waves will lull you to sleep after watching an amazing sunset. A vacation condo should feel like home and I've put a lot of care and effort into making it a place you _want_ to spend time in. Take a look at the pics and I think you'll agree!

Ang tuluyan
This beautiful, 9th floor studio is the perfect place for a Maui getaway! It's one of the highest rated on Airbnb, so rent with confidence! (and please feel free to contact me if you have any questions)

Prices you see on Airbnb include everything... tax, parking, etc. No surprises.

Following enhanced cleaning guidelines... we've always kept the place perfectly clean and doubling down on that! Stay safe! Any questions about the condo or Hawaii Covid policies, just message me.

As of 10/2019, there's a brand new A/C system. Pretty big upgrade replacing the 20 year old system that was there. So you should be able to get nice, cold air anytime!

I also just remodeled with new furniture, couch with memory foam mattress inside, and a new king bed. It's really nice! (but check out the photos to see for yourself)

The beautiful pacific ocean is 50 ft away from your lanai! Listen to the waves and see the stunning views of Lana'i and the setting sun. During whale season, you can see whales all day long. The condo itself is designed as something I would expect from an upscale Maui resort. So it's very well appointed and very comfortable. Including a new high end Sterns & Foster Estate King mattress! A vacation condo should feel like home and somewhere you look forward to returning to.

NOTE: There's usually not a beach directly in front of the condo complex (Royal Kahana). So the nearest beach requires a short, 5 minute walk. There are also plenty of beaches within a 10 minute drive of the condo and my 'secret' beach is about a mile a way. The pool and lawn directly in front of the condo are unaffected. In fact the whole pool area has been remodeled and looks great! So you can sit by the pool and watch the waves. (the sands in Kahana Bay shift around, so sometimes there is a beach right in front. I just can't guarantee it)

There's a few things you should expect from a Maui condo to make it feel like you're home on the ocean:

- Sunset views over the ocean
- The sound of crashing waves and the tradewinds
- A wonderful bed that you just want to dive into
- Well appointed, modern kitchen
- Ocean front pool

The condo has all of these in spades and has other great amenities: King bed, Central A/C, In-condo (free) washer and dryer, full kitchen, free parking, fast internet, and I've left an acoustic guitar for myself and for you! There's nothing like sitting on the lanai playing guitar with the wind and the waves as your background music. (But there is a 40" flat screen TV just in case you'd rather watch that ;-)

I keep my calendar updated. If it says condo is available, it is. I know it's frustrating when you see an available condo and it's just due to folks not updating their calendars.

My name is Jim Tierney and I recently purchased this condo. Since I'll be staying in it sometimes, this is not a normal rental unit where everything was done on the cheap! I love the Westin and their Heavenly Bed, so that was my target in creating the space (minus all the timeshare sales pitches :-).

I figure there's two things people want from a Maui vacation... 1) to see and hear the ocean from their lanai and 2) to get some sleep. :-) As for the ocean, the condo is 50 feet away from the ocean so you can sit on the lanai and watch the waves crash on the beach 80 feet below you or the sun set over the wide pacific and disappear behind the island of Lana'i. When it comes to sleeping I'm pretty particular about the mattress I sleep on, so it was important to find a good mattress that rivaled what I expect from the Westin. I just got a new high end Sterns & Foster King Mattress. It's wrapped up in designer bedding and 600 thread count sheets. It's amazingly comfortable and I think you'll find it's wonderful to listen to the waves as you drift off to sleep.

It's a wonderful, luxurious space that will give you everything you want from a Maui vacation. I look forward to having you experience it for yourself.

If you're into cooking, the kitchen has been completely remodeled with granite countertops and custom wood cabinets. You have all the cookware necessary for a complete meal and then some. The dishes, glassware, and tableware are all beautiful and will make having dinner on the lanai at sunset feel like a 5 star restaurant. You are also a couple minutes away from a market that specializes in local and organic foods, if you're looking for fresh ingredients.

There's also central air conditioner, which is not common in vacation rentals.

Of course, there's the usual stuff, 40' flatscreen TV with DVD and cable, high speed internet with WiFi, speakers to plug an iPod into, hair dryer, small library of DVDs, and even a desk to write postcards on or check email (not that you'd be doing that on your vacation). There's also stuff like beach chairs, a boogie board, and beach towels. The couch becomes a full sized, memory foam sofa bed to accomodate kids or another adult. This IS a sofa bed. It's a nice one, but like all sofa beds it's not the paragon of comfort, especially for adults.

The complex is adjacent to a sandy beach (5 min. walk) which is great for swimming or just laying out. There's a grassy area directly in front with chaise lounges. You're one block from restaurants and shopping. It's an excellent central location to go north to Kapalua/Honalua or south to Kaanapali, Lahaina town and the Lahaina Harbor.

So if you're excited about staying at a wonderful condo, this is it!

Some notes about the complex the condo is in... The pool is nice and well maintained. The fitness center is small, but decently equipped (and free). There's an activities desk to help you book stuff to do. (You can also ask me for recommendations). However, there are no water slides or pool boys bringing you drinks. The condo is a beautiful space surrounded by all Maui has to offer but the resort complex is pretty basic.

Also, they're putting in a temporary sea wall. The sea wall will be finished by 12/9/16. It shouldn't affect your stay at all, other than you might see some heavy machinery driving through the parking lot and see some yellow tape on the outskirts of the property. The condo and complex aren't affected, as the work is being done on the shoreline in front of the complex.

As mentioned, it's a short, 5 minute walk to get to a sandy beach. Although most folks go to a beach with good snorkeling or good waves anyways, which is not Kahana Bay. Black Rock beach or Honolua Bay have much better snorkeling and are 5-10 minutes drive away.

There are a few restaurants and shops by the condo but most are a 5-10 minute drive away.

Good restaurants within a couple minute walk: Miso Phat (great sushi, but pricey), Maui Brewing Company, China Boat and Hawaiian Village Coffee Shop. There are a few small shops nearby but most shopping is elsewhere.

Activities and What To Do
-------------------------------

There's lots of great things to do on Maui and many of them are free.

Whale Watching:

Whale watching is Maui is amazing. Hawaii is the migration destination for about 60% of the North Pacific Humpbacks. Between December and May we’ll get about 12,000 whales and during the peak (Jan 15 – Mar 15) there’s probably about 4-5,000 whales in and around Maui.

The best way to see them is on the small boats. You’re right on the water and if the whales come up to the boat (which happens frequently), you’re 5 feet away from a 50 foot, 50 ton animal. It’s awesome.

I recommend Ultimate Whale Watching ((URL HIDDEN) and Maui Adventure Cruises. Both are great experiences with excellent staff.

FREE WHALE WATCHING! You can also just sit on the lanai and look for whales, particularly if you have a good pair of binoculars. Late in the day, especially around sunset, is good because the spouts become backlit, making it easier to spot them. Not quite as cool as having them a few feet away from a boat, but it's a bit more convenient/comfortable. ;-)

Snorkeling:

You can snorkel off the beach by Sands of Kahana or the ocean entrance slightly North of Royal Kahana (see Where’s Da Beach? Section). It's ‘ok’ and morning is the best time. There are certainly better spots, but it's not bad and it's certainly easy to access! You want to go out to the reef or you can find some fish (and Green Sea Turtles!) by the sea wall. The turtles usually are almost always around close to high tide. They come up to the wall to feed on the plants there. You’ll see them frequently, but it’s not their only spot, so they don’t always show. PLEASE do not touch them or attempt to feed them. They are happy to pose for your photos however!

Some of the best snorkeling can be done off of beaches that are 5 to 15 minutes away from the condo (Honolua Bay or Black Rock at Ka'anapali)… you don't need to get on a boat. That said, the boat trips are usually fun and will take you to places that may be a bit less crowded. I don’t recommend the Molokini crater. It's over rated and there are much better spots to snorkel. However, if you're a diver the back side of Molokini is supposed to be excellent… but not the crater itself. Snorkel trips to Lana’I are recommended though.

If you need to find out when high tide is, this is a good site:

Haleakala Volcano: Sunrise, Sunset, and the Stars

Haleakala is amazing. Sunrise is spectacular, but so is sunset. If you're not inclined to get up at 2am to drive up a mountain… do sunset. And there's an added bonus for sunset! Wait for it to get dark. You will understand the meaning of the words "10,000 feet high on a rock in the middle of the Pacific". The stars are more brilliant than you can imagine. Here is a taste of what those words mean:

Restaurants:

Sansei in Kapalua: best sushi on the island. In fact, as good of sushi as you're likely to find anywhere, including San Francisco, which is where I'm from and has some excellent sushi restaurants. $$$ (or go after 10pm on Thursday, Fri. It's half off. You'll have to suffer through Kareoki, but it's worth it... :-)

Roys: Sadly they have moved to Ka'anapali. They used to be a block from the condo, but now you'll want to drive over there. Very good food. $$$

Maui Brewing Company: about a block or so from the condo. Very good beer and good food, which is a little pricey. But it’s good and convenient. $$+

Miso Phat: Expensive, but very good sushi that’s a block away from the condo. $$$

China Boat: OK Chinese food, but they're a block from the condo and inexpensive for Maui. I probably eat there two or three times a week when I'm on island. Very good deal for lunch. $

Thai Chef: Good Thai food on Maui! It's in Lahaina, but it's inexpensive (for Maui) and very good. I recommend the Pineapple curry. Yum. As with many places on Maui this is BYOB. So go to Foodland (in the same shopping mall), buy a nice bottle of wine, and bring it with you. Ask for Rose and tell her Jim from San Francisco sent you. Don't know if that'll get you anything, but it never hurts to drop names. :-) She's super nice. $$

Star Noodle: Asian fusion type food. Excellent and fresh. Can be very inexpensive (garlic noodles) but is usually pricey as you end up getting multiple small plates. $$ - $$$

I’O: 4 star, expensive restaurant. All their produce comes from their farm upcountry and the food is excellent. Ocean front seating makes for beautiful ambiance. If you’re looking for a special night out this would be my suggestion. (Lahaina Grill and Tropico are also good contenders) $$$$

Hula Grill: Good, not crazy expensive food on Ka'anapali beach. I used to say they were inexpensive but they're prices have gone up. Still not a bad deal, tho. Pesto chicken sandwich is great. I also love the Hoisin Ribs and the Crab Wontons, but everything is good. $$+

Foodland Farms: Supermarket next to Barnes and Noble. They have Poke Bowls for 6.99. Get the Ahi/Avocado poke. Super good, super cheap. They also have an excellent deli with very good cheese, which is not cheap. $ for the poke bowls, $$ everything else. Good wine selection. The regular Foodland in Lahaina has an even better wine selection.

Teddy's Burgers: Great burgers in the Barnes & Noble mall. Cheap. $

Cool Cat: Great burgers on Front st. Not as cheap as Teddy's, but you're paying for that Front st. location. Great place to go after a boat trip as it's right across from the Harbor.

If you're looking for an expensive night out at a fancy restaurant, Lahaina will not disappoint. Some good options: Lahaina Grill, I'O, Pacific'o, Roy’s. Sansei and Star Noodle sort of fall into this category but they’re not quite as ‘upscale’ as the others.

btw… I have not done a Luau in years… but I've heard the Old Lahaina Luau is the best. Ask around though.

Shopping:

There's a Costco by the airport. If you're a member you know the drill. Inexpensive but big boxes of everything.

I think Safeway, generally, has the best prices for a supermarket. It's 10 minutes away. Foodland is not bad. Stay away from the Times Supermarket (which happens to be the closest one to the condo).

The best shopping on the West Side is in Whaler’s Village in Ka’anapali. A mix of upscale shops (Louis Vuitton, etc), galleries, clothing, and gift shops. It’s a 5 minute drive away.

There are a few shops around the condo and a bunch more one mile south in Honokowai. Some good places to get gifts and whatnot for friends but there’s not a lot of variety.

There's a bigger mall in Kahului but for gifts and whatnot it's not really any cheaper.

Art: Front street in Lahaina is the place where most of the gallaries are. Most of it’s overpriced. One big exception is Maui Hands, which has some great stuff by local artists. Great mix of gallery quality photography, ceramic and glass art, jewelry, and smaller gift type items. Definitely worth checking out if you’re at the Prison St. end of Front Street.

Surfing
------------------------------

The surf in front of the condo is ok for beginners, especially on a good day. For more experienced surfers there are a variety of spots along the coast that range from intermediate to very advanced. It's unlikely you're going to find any worthwhile surfing in front of the condo/hotel areas... by definition those tend to be the safer waters with less surf. There is enough space on the lanai for surfboards.

The more consistent breaks tend to be on the other side of the island.

Do a (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) search for Maui Surfing to get a better idea of where to go. I'm not much of a surfer so can't give you too many recommendations.

During the winter it's possible for JAWS to be breaking over by Pa'ia. If so, it's worth trying to go over and check it out. It's one of the most epic, big wave surf spots in the world when it's breaking (which is somewhat rare).

Hi, I'm Jim Tierney. I live most of the year in San Francisco and escape to Maui whenever I get tired of the foggy weather. I run a small software company and have the good fortune of being able to work anywhere there's an internet connection. Luckily that's the case with Maui, so whenever I get an urge for whale watching, diving, or laying in the sun it's no problem coming over. I love diving and the diving in Maui is spectacular, there are some really beautiful spots. I also have a passion for photography, particularly whales and outdoor scenes, so you'll see some of my work on the walls of the unit. I hope you'll check out my place. I put a lot of work into it making sure it was a livable space for when I'm there. So I think the standards I have for the condo is much higher than most rental units. I bought this because I'll be there about two months of the year and I wanted something on the ocean. A friend of mine lives in the same building so I was very familiar with the property and all it offered (ok, so mostly it offered the ocean about 20 feet way :-). It's amazing to watch the sun set during the summer, see the whales during the winter, and listen to the waves all year long.
